Allspice berries derive from a tropical member of the myrtle family. It seems as though this tree couldn't quite make up its mind as to how it wanted to smell and so combined a bit of Clove with a bit of Cinnamon and a touch of Pepper. The combination works very well and Allspice smells beautifully spicy, yet less overpowering than either Clove or Cinnamon.
In its native Caribbean and South American homelands, Allspice leaves and berries have long been used as a kitchen spice and herbal remedy. It was the first spice that was ever brought back to Europe from the New World. It soon gained popularity in the Old World too, and not just as a spice. Up until the last century it was official in the European pharmacopoeias. Herbal medicine rarely uses it now, but aromatherapy is bringing it back to public awareness.

The plant seems particularly useful in the treatment of chronic problems of the digestive system and has helped where other herbs have failed to break patterns of digestive disorders, especially if these involve cramps and convulsions, as the plant has a relaxant effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract. Cat's Claw has proved useful as an antioxidant, preventing cell damage from scavenging free radicals and showed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. He found 4 oxindole alkaloids that Una de Gato enhanced the immune system by extending the half-life of the lymphocytes, the white blood cells responsible for fighting infection, rather than having a direct effect on their proliferation. They also seemed to enhance their actual ability to fight disease causing organisms. Magical: Peruvian shamans regard Una de Gato as a balancer that can restore equilibrium to a system that has become unhinged. It clears obstructions from he various channels, physical and spiritual, that block our flow, the harmonious flow of 'Chi' as the Chinese doctors would say. Obviously, there are good reasons to leave pennyroyal oil alone. However, the pennyroyal plant itself, as the most pungent member of the mint family, may have several good uses around your house.
Pennyroyal is one of the most powerfully aromatic mints. The Latin name 'pulegium' hints at its earlier use as an insecticide, especially for fleas, (Pulex is Latin for 'flea'). Once upon a time it has also been used for culinary purposes, especially in hogs stuffing, but modern tastes have changed and it is no longer considered very palatable. Pennyroyal yields an essential oil, but this has been mostly withdrawn from sale since it was deemed too dangerous. Pennyroyal has always had symbolic sexual connotations and was once commonly used as a lewd metaphor for female pubic hair and illicit sexual affairs. It is reported to have been included in the ritual drink known as Kykeon, the sacramental brew served during the celebrations of the Elysian mysteries in ancient Greece. Medicinal: Pennyroyal can be used as a digestive aid to relax the stomach and intestines and soothe colic pain and flatulence. It is also a powerful diaphoretic and can be used at the onset of a cold or flu. However, Pennyroyal is most famous for stimulating the uterus and for bringing on delayed menstruation. It has a reputation as an abortifacient.

Mints are sobering and clear headed herbs, aloof, even. In mythology they are said to have descended from Mentha, a nymph, who had succumbed to Pluto's passion. His jealous wife Persephone (or, according to some accounts, her mother Demeter), disgusted and enraged, stomped the poor nymph into the ground and punished her with infertility. A hybrid between common Garden Mint and Watermint, Peppermint is indeed sterile. She reproduces by means of creeping rhizomes - though rather prolifically at that. Peppermint has been used for food and medicine for many millennia. From China to Egypt, evidence of its use goes back thousands of years. It is still a popular herbal home remedy and provides flavoring for dozens of products from chewing gum to chocolate and cigarettes to name but a few. Creepy crawlies such as mice, rats, cockroaches and ants detest the scent. Planting Peppermint in the garden, sprinkling it in the cupboards or on their pathways will surely deter them.
Medicinal
Peppermint is mostly used as a digestive aid. It can ease nausea and travel sickness and relieve cramps and colic. It soothes PMS related symptoms such as bloating or abdominal pains. It is also used to decongest the upper respiratory tract and as a steam inhalation it can help clear stuffiness, catarrh and sinus headaches, sinusitis and bronchitis. Peppermint is calming and relaxing. It soothes an agitated nervous system and dispels anxiety and fears. It aids neuralgia and rheumatic pains, strengthens the nerves and tones the entire system. Do not use during pregnancy.

All Mints are said to act as aphrodisiacs and can be used in various love charms and potions. Peppermint clears the mind and aids concentration and helps focusing on one's intent. It is protective against evil spirits and wards off the demons of disease. Peppermint is very cleansing and can help clear the air of lingering emotions and irrational fears or attachments.
Few herbs produce as many variants as the Mint family and each tastes, smells and acts a little bit different. Spearmint is delightful - much less harsh and pungent than the more commonly used Peppermint. This is due to the fact that it contains very little menthol. Spearmint is thus the preferred species for culinary purposes, while Peppermint is favored for medicinal uses. However, that does not mean to suggest that Spearmint does not have any therapeutic use!

Traditional
Spearmint can be used much like Peppermint. It is relaxing and antispasmodic. It aids digestion and alleviates nausea. It may be a useful calming and soothing remedy for PMT. In general its medicinal action is not as strong as that of Peppermint and its taste is milder, which is why it is usually preferred for culinary uses. Due to its milder action it is also generally thought more suitable for children's troubles, such as 'rumble-tum', nausea, insomnia, colic or feverish conditions. Added to the bathwater it is relaxing and restorative, soothing and clearing for the mind.
Magical
Spearmint can be used when studying and at times of intense mental concentration. It can be used for cleansing and protection rituals, for healing and aura cleansing. It protects the practitioner on his astral journeys and during dream work. It enhances mental clarity, concentration and focus.
